Lugol’s iodine, or Lugol’s solution, is a brownish-red liquid composed of iodine (Iā) and potassium iodide (KI) dissolved in water. It is primarily used as a staining agent in microscopy and as an antiseptic in medical and laboratory settings. The solution appears opaque due to the elemental iodine present, and its color intensity can vary depending on the concentration. In medicine, Lugol’s iodine may also be used to treat iodine deficiency and certain thyroid conditions under medical supervision.
Uses of Lugols Iodine
Staining Agent:
It is commonly used as a stain in microbiology to enhance the visibility of microorganisms under a microscope. Lugol’s iodine stains specific structures within cells, aiding in their identification and study.
Iodine Test:
Lugol’s solution is used in chemical analysis to test for the presence of starch. When Lugol’s iodine is added to a solution containing starch, it forms a blue-black color complex, which is a positive test for starch.
Disinfectant:
Due to its antiseptic properties, Lugol’s iodine can be used to disinfect surfaces and equipment in laboratories.
Iodine Supplementation:
In some experiments or cultures, Lugol’s iodine may be added to provide iodine supplementation, particularly in media used for culturing iodine-dependent organisms.

Acetaldehyde
- Chemical Structure: Acetaldehyde consists of two carbon atoms, one oxygen atom, and four hydrogen atoms. Its structure is CH3CHO, where the carbon atom in the middle is doubly bonded to an oxygen atom and singly bonded to a hydrogen atom and a methyl group (CH3).
- Occurrence: Acetaldehyde can be found naturally in various ripe fruits, coffee, and heated milk. It is also produced by the oxidation of ethanol (alcohol) by enzymes in the liver and other tissues in humans, making it an intermediate product in alcohol metabolism.
