Lead dioxide (PbO2) is a chemical compound composed of lead and oxygen. It is a dark brown or black crystalline solid that is insoluble in water. In lead-acid batteries, during discharge, lead dioxide undergoes reduction to lead sulfate and lead ions. During charging, lead sulfate is oxidized back to lead dioxide. This reversible reaction allows lead-acid batteries to be recharged multiple times.
